Game Mechanics
Pressure, movement and space
Combat is built around fast movement, projectile avoidance and reading rooms as tactical spaces. Position is often more valuable than cover.
A deliberately uneven arsenal
Weapons overlap without becoming identical. The shotgun is dependable, the chaingun interrupts enemies, and the rocket launcher trades safety for force.
Monster infighting
Most enemy species can hurt one another, allowing a crowded encounter to become a temporary and dangerous alliance for the player.
Weapons, Enemies, Levels & Walkthroughs
Shotgun
The campaign’s workhorse: economical, predictable and powerful enough to shape the rhythm of early encounters.
Cacodemon
A floating, slow-firing threat that turns vertical space and open arenas into sustained movement tests.
E1M1: Hangar
A compact introduction that quietly teaches doors, height changes, secrets, armour and branching movement in a matter of minutes.
Pistol
The first tool in the Doom Marine's arsenal. It doesn't pack much of a punch, but it'll do in a pinch. Shares ammo with the Chaingun
Trivia & Archive Notes
Shareware as an opening act
The entire first episode, Knee-Deep in the Dead, was distributed as shareware, while the remaining episodes formed the registered version.
Designed to be extended
Doom’s WAD data format helped turn player-made levels and conversions into a lasting culture rather than a short-lived novelty.
